Set decorating is my favorite art department role because of how much character analysis goes into it. In movies we learn about characters through what they say and do. As a decorator, I believe spaces do this as well. The state of the kitchen sink is the difference between a slob and a neat freak. One casually-placed ash tray can turn a character into a smoker. It’s not enough to just fill a space… it’s to hand-select each and every item for the purpose of better storytelling.
